How to deal with spontaneous combustion of yellow phosphorus?

Yellow phosphorus is a silvery-white or light yellow, brittle, waxy solid that spontaneously ignites in contact with air and must be stored sealed in water at room temperature.

It is primarily used in the production of phosphate fertilizers, pesticides, matches, and metalworking additives, and has a wide range of industrial applications. In this incident, a leak from a yellow phosphorus tanker caused it to spontaneously ignite upon contact with air. Yellow phosphorus poisoning can cause liver and kidney damage, so direct contact should be avoided and protective equipment worn.

As the core scene for the research, development and testing of yellow phosphorus, the laboratory also hides the fatal hidden danger of “ignition point 40°C” in its storage process.

If the storage equipment is not sealed enough or the temperature control fails, even if only a few grams of yellow phosphorus come into contact with the air, it may cause spontaneous combustion in the confined space of the laboratory, or even cause toxic vapors to spread, threatening personnel safety.

Safe storage and management of hazardous chemicals:

1. Classified and Zoned Storage

Hazardous chemicals should be stored in separate zones, categories, and warehouses based on their properties. Hazardous chemicals with conflicting chemical properties or protective or fire-fighting methods should not be stored in the same warehouse or storage room.

2. Mixed Storage is Strictly Prohibited

Hazardous chemicals must not be stored together with prohibited materials.

  • Strict Fire Control: Smoking and the use of fireworks are strictly prohibited in buildings and areas where hazardous materials are stored.
  • Highly Toxic Chemical Policy

Warehouse managers must ensure safety, preventing theft, accidents, loss, and violations. They must strictly enforce the two-person system for receiving and dispatching, handling, transporting, locking, and keeping double records.

5. Dedicated Storage Equipment

Flammable and explosive chemicals in the laboratory should be stored in hazardous chemical cabinets with a fire resistance limit of at least 30 minutes.

The ZOYET RFID intelligent reagent cabinet provides a visual solution for the full life cycle management of hazardous chemicals, ensuring safety and convenience for users and efficiency and intelligence for managers. The RFID-enabled load-bearing system is paired with four-color storage cabinets to accommodate different chemical types: gray for toxic chemicals; blue for mildly corrosive chemicals; yellow for flammable chemicals; and red for combustible chemicals.
